The Wisconsin beauty, The American water Spaniel
Here is a Spaniel you won't have seen around much unless you live in the mid west of America.
This is because they are the state dog of wisconsin such is the esteem they are held in. (Which does'nt surprise me personally being a Spaniel myself)
This type of Spaniel is very much used as a a hunting dog rather than a pet although like most Spaniels they are wonderfully socialble and make excellent companions.
The origin of the American water spaniel is thought to have been a fusion of an Irish water Spaniel and a curly coated retreiver sometime in the 18th century.
It was the the first breed developed in America as an all round hunting dog and my goodness are they good.
They reached the peak of their popularity in the 20s and 30s but unfortunatly are almost unknown outside of the midwest of America.
They are smaller than an
English springer Spaniel
but they are a rumbling bundle of Spaniel energy, very alert mentally and intelligent (sounds just like my goodself) which makes them easy to train.
Because of this very alert trait in their character it seems that they make a terrific guard dog.
Typically the
American water spaniel
is 15" to 18" tall and weighs in at between 35 to 45 ponds although the females are a little smaller and I am reliably informed that they can can live up to 16 years.
The most common colour is brown and dark chocolate with the coat being a distinctive curly texture which looks high maintainence to me.
So there you have the pride of Wisconsin another beautiful spaniel.
